Course Proposal : Light, material and Volume Studies

Jakob Marsico + Eddy Man Kim

For the Spring 2018, we propose a new course that explores the relationship between light, material and space. Through a series of studies dealing with light, technology and materials, students will develop a fluency in designing expressive form and lighting scenarios.

The course will progress thusly:

  1. Introduction to properties of light and material studies
  2. Static lighting through translucent and reflective materials and volumes
    1. Material, color, positioning
  3. Natural Light Manipulation
    1. Shadow Control
    2. Leveraging a moving sun
  4. Dynamic lighting through translucent and reflective materials
    1. DMX controlled lighting
    2. Scale models + full scale tests
  5. Projector as light source
    1. Touch Designer (free software)
    2. Pico projectors (Ideate course budget?) + scale models
  6. Interactive | Responsive Scenarios
