CLP Lightwall - 2016
Carnegie Library Pittsburgh - Knoxville Branch
60' x 8' LED lighting, custom software, sheet metal
Consisting of 750 individually controlled LED lights, the Lightwall was commissioned by Edge/GBBN and the Carnegie Library team in order to add a layer of dynamism and liveliness to the recently renovated building. The lighting animation is driven by custom software that creates constantly changing, celestial-looking patterns. Portions of the software developed for this installation would be used to drive the patterning of the proposed chandelier.

View Abstraction - 2016
Butler Institute of American Art - Youngstown, Ohio
15' x 8' Custom software, security camera, PDLC "Smart Glass", electronics.
View Abstraction is a study in low resolution representation. Using computer vision and custom software, the installation attempts to mimic intricate, natural motion with very few pixels.
Compared to the swaying motion of the tree it is observing, the resulting patterns are clunky and un-readable; an extreme example of the machine's inability to fully represent the complexity and subtlety of our world. Natural motion, and the varying degrees to which we can mimic that motion, is a core part of our design process.

Row House Marquee - 2014
Row House Cinema - Pittsburgh
20' x 30', LED lighting, custom software.
The marquee's 400 individually controlled light continuously roll across the ceiling of the marquee while a computer vision system tracks walkers as they pass underneath. The interactive light installation is deliberately restrained. Rather than loudly advertise its interactivity, it was designed to be a neighborhood secret to be slowly discovered over its extended lifespan. Located just around the corner from the Tryp, this project was the first large scale interactive light installation. Many of the underlying rules used to design the animation software have continued to influence ULR's projects.
